I use rewritable magneto-optical disks (650 Mb on two sides)
with the extended file system. As long as you don't change
media everything works fine.

Why is the partition table read at boot time?
IMHO it should be done when opening the device file.
On Interactive and Esix I could use the disk in the same
way as a larger floppy for file systems and tar/cpio archives.
