Subject: FS corruption under 0.97pl6

I'd appreciate any help on the following problem:

Environment: linux 0.97pl6, 8 Meg memory, 10Meg swap.
Hardware: 50MHz 486, 213Meg Maxtor HD.

 Symptoms:

Arbitrary programs randomly break down with signal 11 (seg fault)
and dump cores of large size. Programs more likely to break down
involve intense disk access, like ld or make. Many times the FS
is badly corrupted, with lots of 'block used before' messages.
Several times, the root device seems to have vanished or have been
umounted, i.e., cd / followed by ls gives nothing. Logins get, off
course, disabled since there is no root file system. After reboot from
the floppy, everything is OK.

I understand the problem may be related with the particular HD I
have. Any fixes ? BTW, after a program breaks down once, further
invocations automatically fail. I assume the file is in cache and has
something wrong with it. After a while, they will work again.

 Thank's in advance
