Subject: Hardware Troubles...from a newbie

Hi.
I am a very newbie and am having some rather annoying problems. I cannot
seem to find a comm program that will print anything on the screen after
I connect. Any suggestions? I've tried minicom, pcomm, and xcomm, but none
of them worked.

Problem #2: I have a mono VGA monitor that does a good job of pretending to
be a color monitor, except in Linux. Linux seems to think that I have a
text mono monitor and card. How do I convince Linux to treat it like a color
monitor?

Hardware configuration:
386-40 w/ OPTI chipset
ET 4000 video card w/ 1meg
generic Hayes compatible 2400 baud modem
IIT math co.

Thanks in advance!!
