Success! I got X-windows to work under linux, thanks to
the kind souls on the net (Wayne Hodgen, Louis Ruppert, and
Larry D. Pyeatt) who gave me the jump start I needed.
The key was learning how to invoke X-windows ... I would never
have guessed that the command would be "startx" (smiley!).
Then using "man startx", I could kind of work my way forward,
fiddling with Xconfig, .xinitrc, etc., and using "man" a few
more times along the way before I could finally get it to work.
I've got Windows 3.1 working on my DOS partition, and I
seem to remember it was a _little_ bit easier to get working
(smiley!). However, twm looks great -- better than Windows
IMHO -- and I look forward to playing around with it ...
after getting some more RAM.
SUGGESTION: for future X newbies, a README.X file somewhere
in the SLS distribution giving the necessary first introduction
to configuring and using X-windows would be very useful.
Then, when such a newbie posts to the net asking how to get
the damn thing working, I'll take a leaf from Wayne's book and tell
him to RTFM!! (Joking!). Thanks again.
