Subject: SLS, X, and a TVGA8900C card
Date: Sat, 28 Nov 1992 17:35:08 GMT

I just installed the SLS distribution (again), and got it up and running
with relatively few problems. Now, I'm trying to get X going. From what I
understand, it is possible to run X with a Trident 8900 series chipset,
which is what I have. However, I am having quite a few problems getting it
going.

I decided that, for starters, I would just work on Xmono. Once I have that
working, I can direct my energies to getting the color version going. Here's
what I've tried:

o I created a directory '/home/root' and set HOME to it. (I'm running as
root right now, since the docs recommended it.)
    o I copied Xconfig.mono from /usr/X386/lib/X11 to HOME.
o I edited the line of Xconfig where the mouse type was specified to say
'Microsoft', that being the type of mouse I have.
o I type 'startx'. The screen clears and some garbage appears at the
top. Everything stops. Nothing works, including Ctrl-Alt-Delete, and
I am forced to reset the machine.

Does anyone have any ideas on what is going wrong? I would really like to
get X running, so that I can justify buying a new network card...

Many thanks!
