I got 0.45 sec/record on a 386/40. However, it only compiled after I
commented out the lines in <stdio.h> that have prototypes for the vsprintf
etc. functions (6 lines, I think.) Don't ask me why this helped; I don't
know. It did stop GCC complaining about parse errors on those lines.

The <sample> program included places some fields incorrectly
on the screen. Anybody have an idea why? I've been looking at the code,
but it's pretty complicated.
