Subject: i am going absolutely insane...tcpip straight jacket needed :)

I've dedicated this weekend to getting my linux box up on
the ethernet. unfortunately, I 've run into the same probelms
as everyone else. Here is what I did.

1) installed SMC Elite 16 and changed parameters using software
2) recompiled tcpip with proper values in Space.c in
   0.98.1 kernel.
3) got tcpip-0.8 suite and put stuff in /usr/bin and
   /usr/etc/inet
NOTE: why did EVERYONE erase the tcpip suites on the various
        anon ftp sites?????
4) ran install.net
made up a router cause I don't know the one for this school.
5) all telnet and ftp attempts fail due to 'host unreachable'
or name server lookup, even the loopback.

Would someone please take time out to assist me before I lose my
mind? i'd like to get this finished before Thankgiving.

BTW, I did read the new FAQ. Some suggestions: it never mentioned
where to get ftp, telnet, etc. (aka the tcpip-0.8.tar.Z suite).
in fact, it never even said you need it.
2nd, the part about named is very confusing. i will point out
problems if the author is interested.

again, please please assist me. My dad works at the Coors Virtual Beer
Brewery and I can get you a few free virtual six-packs :)
