From: albinali@cs.columbia.edu (Sabah S. Albinali) Subject: /usr on different partition Date: Sat, 21 Nov 1992 14:32:03 GMT
Rather than repartitioning my harddrive and losing any dos apps, I
decided to keep my partitions as is. I've installed the SLS package
except for tex and X. In order to make more space, I moved /usr to a
different partition, and symlinked to it. I've had no problems so far,
except for a permissions problem , which I fixed by chmod uo+rx.
However, I decided to play the ascii tetris as a normal user for the
first time, and I get an error when trying to write scores out. Is
this related to moving /usr? (I fixed all problems such as ownership
of users directories, bug in adduser of switching uid and gid in
/etc/passwd.)
Also, to install X, I'm going to need to move some things to another
partition. Is there anything wrong with that, or some guidline to
follow? (e.g. / on hda8, /usr on hda9, /usr/bin on hda7.) I know that
this may not be optimal, but right now, all I want to do is play with
linux to decide if I want it, then I'll start fresh if I do.
Finally, how do I use my modem? I have no problems writing software to
do this, but (a) I don't want to duplicate effort and (b) I need some
pointers to start.
Thanks a lot.
