Subject: .98 and up won't run Xfree86{mono or color}
Date: 20 Nov 1992 20:48:43 GMT

Ok, I've been puzzling over this the last couple of weeks, and I'm stumped.

I can run the latest Xfree86 on .97pl2 (contrary to the README) with the
mono server and low-res just fine. But, if I boot anything over .98, the
VGA goes into graphics mode with a mostly blank screen, and dies, leaving
me in graphics mode...

I'm currently trying a .98pl4 kernel, using the EXTENDED_VGA display in the
makefile, and leaving out all the SCSI drivers except the Seagate.
Otherwise, it's a default kernel. Video card is an ATI Integra (28800-5
chipset), in case someone thinks that matters.

Now, what I'm getting under the screen when the X server comes up:

07:52:29> X
no SIOCGIFCONF
XFree86 Version 1.1 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 5000)
Configured drivers:
  VGA2 (monochrome VGA):
      et4000, et3000, pvga1, gvga, tvga8900, generic
VGA2: generic (mem:64k (using 64k) numclocks: 2)
VGA2: clocks: 25 28

This was captured this morning. In tests with another terminal hooked to
/dev/ttys2 and stderr/stdout redirected to it, I also saw something about
an unexpected signal 2 and waiting for the X server to shut down.

I also get the same stuff when I run it as X -pn, so it isn't just the fact
that TCP/IP is compiled in but not set up. Or maybe it is and I don't know
it.

If anyone else has seen this behavior, and has figured out what to do about
it, I'd appreciate some pointers. And if this was covered a few weeks back
and I missed it, well, sorry about that, too...

Thanks.
