I am looking for the binaries to gcc, so that I can start using linux as more than a tool to look at text files.

I have tried downloading the binaries for as86 and gcc from tsx-11.mit.edu, but

gcc no longer exists there (except as source, for which I would need a compiler)
when untar'd, as86 produces some 'binaries', which when run give the message
        cannot run binary image
or something to that effect.

Help???!??!@?
