Hello (Linux-)world !
These wishlist is especially for Linus, but it might be interesting for some
others, too.
The main point is, that there are a lot of patches floating around. Some of
them are very interesting, but they often break with new versions (this is
a general observation and has nothing to do with pl5, which I havn`t tried
out yet :).
I think, a lot of them are very useful for the majority of LINUX users. So
it might be fine, to put them into the standard kernel.
This was the general part, now the specific stuff :
1. SYSV-IPC (semaphores) implemented by balasub@cis.ohio-state.edu
2. selection patch
3. sound support
...
Which patches should be included ?
Nothing that is a special adaption to personal taste or even very country
dependend.
Nothing that depends on special and unusual hardware.
Everything that makes LINUX a full featured UN*X system.
Everything a lot of users might find useful (i.e. selection patch).
Yes, I know Linus' point of view, but I think there are a lot of features
already implemented, which lots of people (including me) don't know about,
so they cant customize their own kernel (even if they know how to do this).
Most of the patches don't break the standard kernel, because they are
selectable via defines (for instance -DSELECTION).
So this is a suggestion to the contributors: make your patches selectable,
it might become easier for Linus to include them to the standard sources, if
he can switch them off.
I hope this will start a useful discussion, so please no flames.
