My comment on this is that it works 100% of the time for me.

I use reboot/shutdown each day at least once (more if I am working on X).

I have an AMI BIOS. Maybe it has something to do with bios settings? I don't
know much about the internals of a intel-based machine, I just love unix
and pray that I don't start to get these problems.
