After looking at the Makefile in /usr/src/linux/net, I gather that I do
not.

Thanks for the fast reply, Zeyd. Saves hours of fruitless experimenting! :-)
I think I might at least write a shell script to warn when someone else is
running Ingres, just for safety's sake.
