I figured it out: I was misreading the instructions. They say to test
it on a floppy before you do your HD, but I didn't realize that even
if you do that, you STILL have to do "./laceup /dev/hda1 wini". Of
course, it makes sense, which is what finally caused me to realize
that I had read it wrong.

Somebody else mentioned that they had a problem similar to mine. If
that was you, try it again this way.
