From: burley@geech.gnu.ai.mit.edu (Craig Burley) Subject: Help Getting Linux to Boot? Date: 23 May 1992 11:59:19 GMT
I'm just now trying to install Linux for the first time ever on my system.
It is a new system, arrived last Saturday. All I've done is rawritten
bootimage-0.96.Z and rootimage-0.95a.Z (after uncompressing them, of course :-)
to floppies and tried to boot the boot image floppy.
It only got this far:
Phoenix 80486/EISA ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.01.22-2
Copyright (C) 1985-1989 Phoenix Technologies Ltd.
All Rights Reserved
Adaptec AHA-1740 BIOS v1.34
Copyright 1991 Adaptec, Inc.
[Standard Mode]
Target 0 - Drive C: (80h)
Target 1 - Device not found.
Loading................................
8 virtual consoles
Now it is just hanging there.
Note that "*MDA" got thrown up in the upper right-hand corner of my screen
during the Linux portion of the boot process. Apparently Linux successfully
recognized that my weird (as-yet-unsupported) monitor (a Sigma Designs
L-View 4-gray-scale) supports MDA (it also supports Hercules).
Because the MDA recognition worked, I'm guessing it's a problem with my
hard drive/Adaptec AHA-1740 stuff.
Note that I haven't done anything about partitioning except to have my
"vendor" set up 4 DOS partitions of 64MB, 64MB, 64MB, and "the rest" as
an extended partition (i.e. 1.2GB - 3*64MB). I'll feel pretty silly if
this is the problem, but the installation instructions I'm using don't
seem to mention it.
I'm also going to try and do some things I've seen previous postings
about, like using my EISA/Adaptec configuration floppy (assuming I have it
and can figure it out) to check that the 1740 offset is C8000 and suchlike.
It seems to already be in standard mode (based on the message displayed),
so that shouldn't be the problem.
My configuration is:
Central stuff:
Tower case w/8 drive bays and 250-watt power supply
Intel 32-bit 80486 CPU @33MHz
Micronics EISA motherboard
64KB cache RAM standard
Support for Weitek 4167-33 math co-processor (don't need the chip yet)
Phoenix 80486/EISA ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.01.22-2
16MB RAM, @70ns?
2 serial ports, 1 parallel port
8 EISA slots
Peripherals:
Adaptec AHA-1740 SCSI-2 controller (BIOS v1.34)
Maxtor PO-12S 1.2GB SCSI-2 hard drive
5.25" (1.2MB) internal floppy
3.5" (1.44MB) internal floppy
Colorado Jumbo 250 tape drive (thru floppy interface, I think)
Hard Drive:
64MB, 64MB, 64MB, and (1.2GB-3*64MB -- extended?) partitions, all of
which are currently recognized by DOS
Wetware Interface:
Sigma Designs L-View 1664x1200 120dpi 4-gray-scale monitor & card
Northgate Computer Systems' OmniKey/101
