Well, this was due to my own foolishness. I modified the image on my boot
floppy, not the image, so the offset 508 was still 0000. Changed it
to 0802, and it works fine.

Having looked over the FAQ, I see I'm probably the first person to have
tried the Adaptec driver with a 1740. Well, it works. Pretty well,
too. Thanks, guys!

Still looking for this info.

BTW: installation of X is a joke. I installed the directories where they
are supposed to go, did the two or three config changes, and blam-o, X
works!

Caveat: My Logitech bus mouse doesn't work. I'm trying to get the stuff
necessary to compile in the new driver, but, alas, I'm afraid I may run
out of partition space. Can anyone send me a compiled, bus-mouse-ready
kernel (preferrably .96, because interruptible HD interrupts works fine
for me, but beggers can't be choosers)? I'd appreciate it.
