Those lockups were caused by my modem using DSR in much the same way
as DCD. This confused the "clever" trick to auto-detect devices that
support DSR flow control. There are probably many other modems that
do the same thing ...
 
Fix: in my serial.c, uses_dsr should be initialized to whatever is
appropriate for the local configuration (0 if hardware flow control
isn't really needed) and the automatic setting of uses_dsr in
serial_open should be removed.
