Hiyall,
X and Trident (yeah that old chestnut again). I have seen quite a few
postings now asking if X will or wont run on Linux with a Trident
card. I downloaded the X stuff from mcc and it says that X will run
on a card with the XXXX chip (and it names the chips, one of which is
the tvga). Surely the TVGA is the trident chip?

Could someone PLEASE post a definitive answer as to whether X will or
won't run with Trident (however badly/slowly). I'd just like to see
what it looks like. I know there are various cards, with various
amounts of RAM. Maybe it will run but only with X card or later with
Y RAM or greater. Please let me know, so I can buy a different card
if I need to (or wait if it will be possible, but not yet).

Also I grabbed the vgalib stuff. the vgatest* file runs fine, but if
I try to do a make I get errors from the linker reporting that it can
resolve the ioperm symbol. Is this because I've got gcc2.1 and I need
gcc2.11 ?

As a linux newbee I'm keeping detailed notes on all stages of my
progress (right from day one.) My aim is to be familiar with the
following
1. initial installation
2. upgrading kernel
3. upgrading compiler
4. installing X

(I'm on 3). When I've done all four I'll go through all my notes, and
create my FAQ file, which of course anyone can have.

Thanks to everyone, Linux is really amazing.
JJ

P.S. I'm using 0.96a and I'm getting a strange intermitent fault. If
I select SVGA mode 6 (smallest chars), and I'm not logged in as root,
then my keyboard wont give me the / character, but logged in as root
it will. This doesn't happen in any other SVGA mode (well it hasn't
happened yet). I've tried to isolate it (who logs in first, on which
VC, whether the other logs out first.......) but I can't. Any clues
(or does everyone just use mode 0, in which case try modes 3 and 4)?
