Subject: LILO - Generic boot loader (ALPHA TEST RELEASE)
Date: Sun, 28 Jun 1992 23:33:20 GMT

A preliminary alpha test version of a generic (e.g. file-system-independent)
boot loader called LILO ("LInux LOader") is on banjo.concert.net,
/pub/Linux/Incoming/lilo.0.tar.Z

You need a 0.96 kernel (patches are relative to 0.96b), any reasonably up
to date gcc and as86/ld86 to use it.

I've appended the advertising section of the README to this posting.

LILO - Generic Boot Loader for Linux ("LInux LOader") by Werner Almesberger
=============================================================================

This is the first ALPHA test release of a new boot loader. Be sure to have
some means to boot your system from a different media if you install LILO on
your hard disk.

This version will be replaced as soon as better kernel support for LILO
becomes available.

Features
========

  - does not depend on the file system. (Tested with Minix and MS-DOS FS.)
  - can be used to boot from floppies and from hard disks.
  - should be able to replace the master boot sector on Linux-only systems.
    (UNTESTED)
  - supports up to four different boot images that can be selected at boot
    time. Root and swap disk/partition can be set independently for each
    image.
  - boot sector, file map and boot images can be all on different disks or
    partitions.

Restrictions
============

  - SCSI disks are not supported yet.
  - images can not yet be read from device special files.
  - BIOS drive codes can not be manually specified for boot image files.
  - requires some obscure kernel patches that will certainly never be part
    of any kernel release. However, some functionally equivalent extensions
    are expected.
