From: liebgold@mott.seas.ucla.edu (Dan M. Liebgold) Subject: Getting X running... Date: 28 Jun 1992 22:41:31 GMT
I apologize if this is a FAQ, but the info did not seem to be readily
available.
I have everything installed (I think) correctly for X to run (shared libs,
binaries, etc). When I type startx, X386 displays the version number
and the configuration briefly, then the screen is cleared, and the system
freezes. I can't switch virtual consoles (by the normal alt-f? means or the
special ctrl-sysreq-f?) and I can't kill the server with ctrl-alt-backspace.
Oh, and the screen remains blank. Is this a symptom of incorrect Xconfig
settings for the mouse or the display? I haven't done all the calculations
for the refresh rate and frequencies, I just chose the pre-configured "640x480"
mode, since thats all my monitor can do. Or is this something else...?
BTW I have a Trident 8900 card, and that did not appear to be among the
supported SVGA cards (it has 1 meg vram). I also have a logitech busmouse...
And the line in Xconfig reads: busmouse "" (since there is no driver for
a busmouse and it wants the name of one....
thanks for any info (including the name and location of the correct FAQ-file
or other info file)....
