There is the `l' flag missing for the tar command in /install:
tar clf - . | ( cd mnt; tar xvpf -)
Either type this command or change the install script (you'll
need a running LINUX to do so). The corrected root-0.96 image is
also available on on ftp.dfv.rwth-aachen.de.
