Subject: mtools and 1.44 MB diskettes
Date: Mon, 22 Jun 1992 04:55:16 GMT

Hi once again!

I am trying to get x up and running, and need to read a zipped file from
a 1.44 MB dos disk to get the sources on my linux partition. I installed
mtools per the included readme instructions and setup my /etc/mtools file
as follows

A /dev/ps0
B /dev/ps1

where

/dev/ps0 was created using "mknod /dev/ps0 b 2 28" and
/dev/ps1 using "mknod /dev/ps1 b 2 16"

mdir works perfectly with 720k diskettes via b:, however, whenever I try
to read a 1.44 MB diskette via a: I get the message

No support for 80 tracks, 2 heads, 18 sector diskettes
mdir: cannot initialize A

Anyone know what is going on, and how I would go about fixing this? I am
running 0.96a (no patches), using the mtools.n.tar.Z binary from tsx-11.
The diskette in a: was formatted 1.44 MB under DOS 5.0 using either the
builtin DOS format command or fdformat 1.8 (I don't recall which).

I'd be grateful for any helpful suggestions, as I have exauhsted both my
own knowledge and that I could glean from the various FAQs.

Jean.
