Subject: Shared/static - what does it all mean?

I've only run across shared/static libraries with Linux and GCC2.11, and I'm
none too clear on the subject. Could someone explain the difference? To my
mind, even the words are strange - I would think of "dynamic" as the opposite
of "static", for example.

Alternatively, is an explanation available somewhere in the GNU documentation?
