Subject: gcc2.12c and Linux 0.96apatch4

I am trying to get linux 0.96a patch4 compiled with gcc 2.12c from tsx-11.mit.edu, I keep getting the following error:
/usr/lib/static/libgcc.a(_builtin_new.o): Undefined symbol ___new handler referenced from text segment

The error has only just developed after upgrading from 2.11c to 2.12c in attempt to fix some probems compiling c-news.
Any ideas?
