I've just done a backup (well I *hope* I did) without using the
tape-length parameter. It seemed to work okay and came out at about
the right number of disks. Can tar pick up the device size from the
driver ?

Anyway ... I had done some tests before that and found that the
+compress option caused a similar error to that original quoted.
I didn't use +compress, surprise, surprise !
