From: jliddle@rs6000.cmp.ilstu.edu (Jean Liddle) Subject: Partitioning SCSI HD - Please Help Date: Sun, 07 Jun 1992 15:57:06 GMT
Greetings fellow LINUXers!
I have downloaded and read all of the FAQs on tsx-11 for both LINUX and SCSI.
Unless I overlooked something, I was unable to find the solution to the
following problem: (Sorry if this turns out to be a FAQ anyway!)
My system
486/33 ISA, 8 MB RAM, 256k cache, AMI Bios, Opti Chipset
Adaptec 1542b SCSI Adapter
Maxtar 213SY (ID=0) 210 MB
Maxtar 7130(??) (ID=1) 130 MB
I am trying to partition drive 0 (213SY) for both DOS and LINUX. I am
installing using the bootscsi (with offset 508-509 set to 00 00) and
the 95a root image. Booting from floppies works like a charm!
I have 1 primary DOS partition and 150 MB unpartitioned, waiting for LINUX!
I would like to use the other 3 primary partitions for LINUX: root, user, and
swap.
However, the 95a fdisk cannot touch my SCSI drives. I have downloaded
the scsi fdisk, but don't know how to move it from DOS to LINUX disk -
is there a way to do this with only a floppy LINUX system and DOS? Any
cross-filesystem copy utilities floating about? I was goint to try and
move this to the .95a root disk and use it.
MS DOS Fdisk will only allow 2 partitions/hd, which makes it less than
useful for LINUX. Other PD fdisks (part, etc.) require specific disk
parameters, which the BIOS views differently than the HD. One FAQ suggests
getting this info from the bios, saying that what the BIOS thinks is what
one must use.
HOW DOES ONE GET THIS INFO FROM THE BIOS?
In short, any help, tips, pointers, etc. would be much appreciated!!
Thanks!
Jean.
PS - I have consulted the following FAQs:
DOS Beginners Guide, Beginner's Guide: Installation, linux FAQ 1/2,
SCSI.FAQ, INSTALL-0.95a. Did I miss something?
