Subject: X will not run after recompile of kernel
Date: Wed, 29 Jul 1992 20:09:48 GMT

A couple of problems I'm having,

1) after recompiling with patch 2 I can't get X to run any more. It gives me
the following errors (by using startx 2> errors.dat) and the screen just
hangs:

giving up
xinit: Interrupted system call (errno 4): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error

I can still get disk movement by typing ls -lR but the screen hangs and I
have to reboot. I tried reinstalling the X binaries from Xbase and switching
back to twm from olvwm but nothing changes. Any ideas?

2) I've been trying to port a program called GRASS to linux ( a public
domain GIS) and am having some problems that I feel may be related to linux
or my hardware. I am able to display and manipulate raster data but when it
comes to vector data I'm running into problems. It is very temperamental in
that sometimes it will display vector data, sometimes it will hang my
machine, and other times it gives me errors about floating point exception
and dumps the core. I know this is rather vague, but I was wondering if it
may be something to do with memory contraints or otherwise.

My setup is as follows: 486/33 with math-co
                        8 Meg RAM/10 Meg swap

Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks,
