Here's something that works for me (and I haven't found anything similar to
it in this newsgroup or in the FAQ's). I think there is a mouse test program
that came with X11R5 1.1. Try running that and see if it gives back reasonable
values (it did for me an my serial C7). If it does than start Xwindows, and
run the mouse test program in the Xterm window. After you exit the test
program, the mouse should behave normally.

I can't really guarantee that this will work (it worked for me). If it does
pull the loop out of the test program (so it just initializes the mouse and
exits without any user intervention). and put it in your .xinitrc file.

BTW: The mouse set up in my Xconfig file is logitech, 9600 baud (baudrate
doesn't matter). The mouse test file was in /tst/mouse/mouse. I'm pretty
sure it came with the Xwindows. (It just appeared on my hd one day!)
