Given that the current pcomm sources / binaries (basically) do not work
would it not be sensible to purge them from the main ftp sites, and
(if possible) replace them with some that do? At present they're just
a kind of mine waiting to explode in the face of the beginner.

The same applies to xcomm, though to a much lesser extent. (I'd be
happy to contribute my slightly-tidied version of the xcomm sources).

PS
Can anyone remind me where the sources for rz/sz live? I found them
once but seem to have purged them from my machine a while back...
