This used to happen to me too (hanging with out timing out), until I
upgraded to Linux 0.96c-pl2.

Now the only problem I have is xcomm (easily solved: use kermit
instead :^>). (Oh, and occasionally I get a busy signal. Is there a
patch for that? :^>)

Seriously, though, If you haven't upgraded to 0.96c-pl2, you should
try it.
