The 1542 is a bus-mastering disk controller. The 1522 uses programmed
I/O and/or DMA.
I think you've exaggerated the price difference. The 1542B is available
OEM (just the controller, no drivers, cables, etc.) for about $ 165. I
haven't seen the 1522 cheaper than $ 135 or so.
