As far as I know from reading the Release announcement of X386 1.2E 1.0
there is NO, I repeat NO support for the Diamond Speedstar with or
without HiColor that uses the new BIOS version 5.0 with variable clocks.
With Linux kernel 0.95c setting SVGA mode to particular value then when
startx with Xconfig NOT having a clock line, the desired variable clock
could be achieved. WIth kernel 0.96 patch level 2 this ability has
become diminished. Green and I have not yet experimented with Linux
0.96c patch level 1 or 2 with the new Diamond card.
From Steve Hite's article, it appears he has not yet purchased his SVGA
card, or else he knows how to easily set the variable clocks. Of
course, if you only want the 80 Mhz pixel clock, then the new Diamond
card is fine (also easy to get 25 and 28 MHz clock for 640x480).
