The requirement in question appears to be that you start the bootable
partition at a cylinder boundary. If you wish to do this in the first
partition on a disk, you can of course leave a gap; I prefer to use the
first partition for swap space or for DOS myself. I don't think the
origin of the version of shoelace will make any real difference.

All of this discussion appears to ignore the fact that shoelace will
be obsolete when the new file system is used for boot partitions; in
that case we really need to switch to LILO as soon as possible.
