Well, for a $149 (Microlab in Computer Shopper), it's hard to go
wrong with the Diamond Speedstar Hicolor w/1meg (the Speedstar Plus can
be had for $10 cheaper but why not go all the way?). Along with the
Orchid Prodesigner II, it's one of the most frequently cited ET4000 cards
that's on the net (highest dot clock is 80). I've heard of one or two
ET4000 cards that have a high dot clock of 92 but 80 should be able to
drive a good 17" monitor at 1152x900 non-interlaced (dunno the refresh rate)
and that's about as far as you'd want to push a 15.5" - 16.0" diagonal
screen (i.e., 1280x1024 is ludicrous).
P.S. I'm about to get a 17" Nanoa F550i for $1098 from Hi-Tech USA in
California. It got very high marks in PC Magazine's review
(I couldn't believe it was about $130 cheaper than the Mag
Innovision MX17F. BTW, make *sure* you get the newer Nanoa F550i
that comes with color control. It will be in a box with a baby
blue strip glued to several corners and *not* a reddish brown strip.
Also, the front panel will say something like "Advanced Image Control."
