Subject: remote xterms over the modem?

Has anyone had any experience in setting up a system that would be able
to open an xterm on a remote machine via a standard modem? What do you
have to install/set up on the local & remote system, and what baud rate
is needed for practicality? Aren't the internet links via phone lines?
What does it take to set up an internet node?

You can see that I don't really know a lot about the subject ...
