Many thanks to Philip Balister, who with the help of Daniel Jimenez,
came up with the following Xconfig:

  FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc"

  Keyboard
    AutoRepeat 500 5
    ServerNumLock

  Microsoft "/dev/ttys1"
    BaudRate 1200
    Emulate3Buttons

  vga256
    Chipset "pvga1"
    Modes "640x400"
    Clocks 36
    VideoRam 256

  ModeDB
   "640x400" 36 640 648 768 800 400 412 414 449

This gives a 640x400 256-colour mode on Paradise 256K cards, which at
least gets me going.

Now I have to work out what a Hewlett-Packard HIL mouse really is....
Any ideas anyone?

Quentin
