Hear Hear! I agree. split c.o.l! it's big enough, i think.

I'd suggest:
        comp.os.linux.kernel patches, kernel stuff, Linus's things.
        comp.os.linux.x X11 related stuff.
        comp.os.linux.gcc for the constant GCC stuff. (in place of the
                                (mailing list, perhaps. who knows)
and leave comp.os.linux for the new users' questions
