From: jliddle@rs6000.cmp.ilstu.edu (Jean Liddle) Subject: mounting as non-root, FAQ unclear Date: 14 Jul 1992 03:23:13 GMT
Hi! I and a couple of other people I have converted to linux
have the following problem, when trying to mount diskettes
as non-root:
"mount can't open lock-file"
I have read the FAQ, which offers the following solution:
"...set the setuid bit to mount". This is extremely unclear
to me. Does this mean chmod 4nnn /bin/mount? (this didn't
work), i.e. setuid the mount binary? the /mnt directory?
chgrp mount /bin/mount + chmod 4nnn /bin/mount? We tried
several of these combinations without success. We would
like to be able to mount floppies as non-root. Could
someone who has done this please explain how it is done.
Also, it might be a good idea if the FAQ were more
specific on this point (just what commands to enter, etc.)
I'm not complaining - the FAQ has been invaluable, but
in this instance I have no clue as to what was meant.
On another, unrelated subject - I just downloaded and
compiled the xcomm sources "out of the box" (with
-DDEBUG removed from the CFLAGS). The binary works
well, except that characters I type to the screen
are not visible until a carrage return is hit. Anyone
know how to fix this.
Also, someone mentioned xc2.tar.Z, which is supposed
to have the rz, sz, etc. binaries compiled without
-DDEBUG. I was not able to find this file on banjo or
tsx-11. Anyone know where it might be?
Thanks in advance for any help!
Jean.
