First of all, I have not seen any 486 LocalBus machines that do not
use the G486PLB motherboard. I looked through Computer Shopper, and
they all had photos of exactly the board that is in my machine. :-)
So, if you get a 486 LocalBus system, you'll probably have similar
experiences. There may be other LocalBus motherboards, but I couldn't
find any in Computer Shopper. FWIW, the G486PLB motherboard uses the
OPTi chipset. Mine (a Comtrade) has an AMI BIOS.
Second, on my Comtrade (G486PLB-based) I am using the G-Host4000 Plus
video board which is a LocalBus ET4000 with HiColor and an integrated
IDE controller. I have had no problems with this, once I got Xconfig
correctly set up for X11v1.1.
(I had problems early on with the IDE controller, but they seem to
have been related to a corrupt filesystem; they have since
disappeared.)
