The MCC interim versions of Linux try to supply (1) a simple installation,
and (2) a wide and through selection of utilities. This last version
is adequate for 0.96c, and I shall be fixing any reported bugs as fast
as possible. But the size of the release precludes revising the whole
thing every day. The GNU utilities are all compiled with the latest
system calls, so they should be adequate for the upcoming changes in
available file systems.
The root disk contains a smaller collection of utilities, but they are
all absolutely the latest. For example, the mount command on the latest
root disk can be used to mount DOS and efs file systems, once you make
the required patches to the kernel. I didn't supply this with the MCC
version because I didn't have access to the source at the time.
Similarly Jim has used one or two new utilities by Rick Faith which I
just didn't have. The root disk is good if you want to have the absolute
latest of everything, but you must also get several other utilities from
other sources.
The uploaded collections are usually good if you are trying to keep the
latest and best of everything. If you want to get started, either of
the others should be adequate, depending on your aims, experience,
desire to keep absolutely up to date, and the cost of ethernetting.
