   I don't remember the exact error, but it completly refuses to work.

If I remember right mtools only knows about /dev/PS[01] and /dev/AT[01].
If you want to use different devices you have to supply the specs
as well (in /etc/mtools). Don't ask me for the format though, maybe
it's in the man or sources.
