Linux does not use Mach, nor any other pre-existing kernel. Is
completely written by Linus Torvalds (+ collaborators, from the
Linux-activists mailing list (which this newsgroup tries to replace for
people with news access)).

I don't think saving steps has been a guiding priciple for Linus. In
fact, I secretly think he started the project because he got tired of
playing Prince of Persia (or something like that, I never bothered to
take a look at the game).
