Man, this is *STRANGE*! It *sounds* like you're still using the old getty!
I definitely would *NOT* recommend that anyone use your shell script.
It even has a *typo* in it!! (check the first instance of "ten"...)

I've never had any problems using uugetty... It works great on /dev/ttys0
with a Hayes Optima 24 (2400 baud V.42bis). I can call into my linux-box
from anywhere else, and I can kermit out of it just as easily. It's supposed
to be using the same lock files as the UUCP suite, so I doubt I'd have any
trouble using uucico either.
