I do the following:
        uuencode filename.tar.Z filename.tar.Z > filename.uue

(uuencode the filename...so it decodes with the same name...stash the
        uuencoded output in filename.uue)

it does if you set file binary in kermit.
uuencode/uudecode is in SLS as I recall...look for bin.taz
