Last night I managed to compile the whole thing, including fstat (finally!)
The fix to get fstat to compile is to remove mmap.c and mmap.o from the
lists of files in the Makefile; after that, the whole things proceeds to com-
pletion without any problem. Now, all of them work for me (using the patched
version of 0.99).
