Subject: [BUG REPORT] Partition get corrupt when floppy is accessed
Date: 15 Dec 1992 14:44:51 GMT

Somebody suggested we should concentrate on bug fixes before releasing ver 1.0,
so here comes a bad one.....

I did an 'tar tvf /dev/fd0' last night (by mistake, I know about this bug),
with the result that simple commands
like 'cat' started to dump core, getting 'fs_inode: bit already cleared' now
and then for no good reason, and other oddities. When I tried to reboot the
machine it hung by the 'Partition table OK' message. An old boot diskette was
tried where 'fsck' reported 'Root inode is not directory'. So, as far as i can
tell, random bytes was spread all over the disk.

To clearify, i've had problems with this since i started to use Linux, and it
ONLY shows up when the hardware cache is ENabled (but THEN it is a sure killer).
I,ve tried to replicate the pattern with the cache DISabled, but it's steady as
rock.

I have an noname OPTI chipset, AMI BIOS, 386-40 Mhz motherboard with a
very-much-no-name IDE disk/floppy controller card.

I can live with this bug, but it's a nuisance having to reboot every time i
want to use the floppy.

Merry Christmas to you all !!!
(I hope i didn't ruin your christmas, Linus :-) )
