get /pub/Linux/Incoming/set-deskjet.c on sunsite.unc.edu...
it solves this problem by sending the correct init string to the printer...
printf("\x01b\x026\x06b\x033\x047");
in case your curious... this should also work as a shell script by
echoing (with a smart echo) to /dev/lp1.
