Thats what is so strange about it. I was logged in as root and the
directories that I created were set to rwx for the owner (root).
I had no problems with directories that already existed with the same
permitions.
We finally backed up and re-installed SLS from scratch and that fixed
the problem. I have been using Linux since version 1.2 and have never run
into this problem before. I still have no idea what it was.
