Subject: TCP/IP and hostname confusion
Date: Mon, 7 Dec 1992 00:05:30 GMT

I finally got TCP/IP set up, and am trying to
define a hostname for myself in /usr/etc/inet/hosts
(and to make sure it works I put a link to it
in /etc/hosts). However, none of my TCP/IP clients
seem to search the list when looking up hostnames.
Is this because I don't run named? Or it is possible
to somehow use the hosts file first and ask the
nameserver if the hostname isn't found there (without
using named, that is)?

I could configure and run named, but I don't need
all of that functionality. If I absolutely MUST
run named to get this to work, could someone help
me out with writing the proper named.boot and
named.hosts for this simple setup?

In other words, I have a name server available, but
I want to have a set of local IP addresses only
used on this machine (aliases, if you will).

Any hints? Thanks.
