one underlying problem is that the uucp programs are seg faulting.
drop back to a kernel prior to 0.98-5 and it'll go away.

another underlying problem might be that you're using Ed's obsolete custom
mail program from mailpak1.3 (gone in the coming 1.4 according to him).
Grab smail3.1.28 from the newspak directory on sunsite. It works fine with
0.98-5.

(has anybody gotten uucp to work with a 0.98-5 kernel? I even get seg
faults when I rebuild Taylor UUCP 1.03 from sources).
